Background of the Study
Agricultural startups play a crucial role in driving innovation and increasing productivity in Nigeria’s agricultural sector. However, accessing adequate financial resources remains a significant challenge for these startups. The Bank of Agriculture (BOA) was established to provide financial support to agricultural enterprises, particularly startups, to foster growth and sustainability in the sector. Despite the critical role of BOA in providing loans and grants to agricultural startups, there is limited research on how effective this financial support has been in promoting the growth of these enterprises.
This study examines the financial support provided by BOA to agricultural startups, focusing on how it has impacted the development and sustainability of these businesses. Given the high risk associated with agricultural ventures, it is essential to understand the effectiveness of BOA’s support programs in enabling startups to overcome financial barriers and thrive in a competitive market (Olubayo & Akinyemi, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Although BOA provides financial support to agricultural startups, the effectiveness of this support remains uncertain. Many startups report difficulties in accessing loans and grants, while others face challenges related to high interest rates, lengthy approval processes, and limited financial products tailored to the specific needs of agricultural businesses. This study aims to evaluate the impact of financial support provided by BOA on the growth and sustainability of agricultural startups.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the impact of financial support from BOA on the growth of agricultural startups in Nigeria.
2. To evaluate the challenges faced by agricultural startups in accessing financial support from BOA.
3. To propose strategies to improve the effectiveness of BOA’s financial support for agricultural startups.
Research Questions
1. How does financial support from BOA impact the growth and sustainability of agricultural startups?
2. What challenges do agricultural startups face in accessing financial support from BOA?
3. What measures can be taken to improve the financial support programs for agricultural startups?
Research Hypotheses
1. H₀: Financial support from BOA does not significantly impact the growth and sustainability of agricultural startups.
2. H₀: Agricultural startups do not face significant challenges in accessing financial support from BOA.
3. H₀: There are no effective measures to improve the financial support for agricultural startups by BOA.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on agricultural startups in Nigeria that have received financial support from BOA. Limitations include potential biases in self-reported data and the challenges of isolating the specific effects of BOA’s support on startup success due to the influence of external factors.
